AdminHistoryHarols Whitehead was a piecer at Durban Mill, Heron Street in Hollinwood and lived at 300 Coxley Hill Road, Oldham. He enlisted as a Private and was wounded on 17 May 1916 and sent to the UK on 26 May 1916. He was awarded the DCM whilst serving with the 2/9th Battalion the Manchester Regiment and was cited in the London Gazette on 3 Jun 1918 and 21 Oct 1918, having taken over command of his platoon when the Platoon Sergeant was evacuated sick. He was a Lance Corporal at the time and organised the men under heavy fire and difficult conditions. He was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the 9th Battalion the Manchester Regiment and was cited in the London Gazette on 27 Jun 1918. He attended the Old Comrades Association between 1951 and 1966 and attended the 50th reunion. His address in 1964 was 346 Hollins Road, Oldham.
