AdminHistoryMajor John Haworth Whitworth was a graduate of Wadham College, Oxford. He was a Manchester barrister. On 10 September 1914 he joined the Manchester University Officer Training Corps (O.T.C.) having been pursuaded he could be more useful to the army if he took a commission rather than follow his impulse and join as a private soldier. After his training he joined the 2/6th Battalion the Manchester Regiment and commanded B Company until October 1917, when he became second in command of the battalion. He served with the Manchester Regiment and was wounded on 26 March 1918 whilst temporarily commanding his battalion. He died of wounds on 31 March 1918.
