In civilian life employed by Oxendale & Co. Originally enlisted in the 19th Pals Battalion as Private 12091 in September 1914. (9 Platoon of C Company) Later commissioned joining the 16th Battalion 13 June 1917. As 2nd-Lieutenant awarded the Military Cross (LG ?/01/1918) ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Coming under very heavy machine–gun fire just before reaching their objective his platoon hesitated to advance. At this critical moment he rushed forward with splendid disregard of personal danger, rallied his men and gained the objective, which he promptly and skilfully consolidated.’ |
