AdminHistoryAccording to Lt. Col. Heywood's notes, this company was furnished by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Volunteer Battalions and mobilised at Ashton-under-Lyne. The company was raised as a result of the army order issued at the end of 1899 which stated that "a carefully selected company of 116 all ranks may be raised for each line battalion serving in South Africa from the affiliated Volunteer Battalions".
