AdminHistoryTameside Metropolitan Borough Council was formed in 1974. It brings together nine towns including Ashton-under-Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale, Mossley and Stalybridge. The borough is located to the east of Manchester and is bounded by Oldham to the north, Glossop to the east and Stockport to the south, covering an area of 40 square miles. The river Tame, a tributary of the Mersey, runs through the borough; hence 'Tameside'.
