AdminHistory | The Ashton-under-Lyne Savings Bank was established in 1829 by Isaac Jackson, the Assistant Overseer of the Poor in the Ashton Union. He acted as the bank's actuary until 1838 when his daughter Mary took over the post. She held this position until 1852. The very first statement of account prepared on 22nd November 1829 showed that there were 22 depositors, 14 of whom had balances to their credit not exceeding £20 each and 8 with amounts not exceeding £50. The bank was first located at 22 Church Street, and moved in 1852 to Park Parade and moved to new premises at Warrington Street in 1881. A new branch building was erected at Old Street in 1911. This branch was built by Messrs Saxon Brothers of Stalybridge and the architect was Messer's W.H. George and son of Warrington St, Ashton. The total cost including furniture was £3,800 which was well within the estimated budget. The branch was opened by Sir Albert Kaye Rollit, the chairman of the Statutory Inspection Committee of the Trustees Savings Bank. The bank later became a branch of National Westminster (NatWest) Bank. |
