AdminHistory | Coal mining was at one time one of the most important industries in Denton and most of the collieries were situated in the Haughton district. The pits included Parsonage Pit, the Roger Mine, the "Nibble and Clink", the "Greatwood Pit" and the Broomstair Pit. The Burton Nook was the main shaft of the Denton Colliery Company and was sunk in 1841. It went down to the Roger and Great Mines. For many years, the Denton mines were worked by the J. F. Fletcher. In about 1867, they were leased to Peter Rothwell who transferred them in 1872 to the Denton Colliery Company, of which he was managing director and principal shareholder. The Denton Colliery Company purchased the Haughton collieries from Messrs. Thomas Shaw and Sons in 1873. The firm was in operation until 1929; the pit-head gear of the main shaft was demolished in 1932.
