| AdminHistory | The National Gas and Oil Engine Company was founded on Wellington Street in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1889 by Henry Bickerton and Sir Douglas Clerk. Both men were experts on internal combustion engines. The engines they produced were used in small workshops, mills and factories to generate power for the operation of machinery. During the First World War the firm was commissioned to make 12 cylinder engines for high speed naval ships and during the Second World War it supplied 'jigs' for Manchester and Lancaster bombers. The firm had an international reputation and supplied engines for use in university and techical schools and received regular visits from overseas firms to learn about its developments. |
